The Lakers get a guy who is a more all around team player who was at a time one of the best defenders in the league. Mcgee is a shot blocker but is not really an elite defender and Gasol is head and shoulders above Mcgee when it comes to scoring ability, passing ability and rebounding ability.....Also Gasol is not the shot blocker Mcgee was but Gasol plays tough bump and grind man to man defense like old school NBA days of the 1980s and he doesnt get pushed around easy at all by other big men. The biggest knock on Mcgee his entire career has always been that he relied totally on his leaping abilty and height to have any success because of his slender frame McGee has always had trouble defending or rebounding against more physical big men like Gasol who were bulkier and stronger than him...most of Mcgee's blocked shots also come against much smaller players when they are driving the lane and not against other big men his size that create space for their shots by bumping Mcgee off them.....all this has a lot to do with why Mcgee who started for the Lakers most of the year found himself not even playing in the playoffs hardly when the Lakers needed a more physical big man and that is why suddenly Dwight Howard was playing more by far than McGee. Gasol is 10 times the all around player of both Howard and McGee put together. Howard is still good defense and rebounding but no one ever has thought Howard was a dependable offensive threat in years now. So this is a win for the Lakers really and plus they got Gasol to come back instead of going to play over seas like he talked about doing for only the veteran minimum and that is a bargain... The Lakers save cap space and get a older but still better player who is an all around Team player. Now as for Toronto yes they shouldnt worry about Gasol. They were not looking to really bring him back. The signing of Aaron Baynes who is younger and a similar player though not as good as Gasol at the same age....still the Raptors are really just starting to near what should be a rebuild and letting the older Gasol leave should not worry them at all. As for Magee....I am sure he is not happy at all going to the rebuilding Cavs.....and he isnt going to see starter playing time either because Andre Drummond is there and is an all star and may be the best rebounder in the NBA right now. McGee though was a smart pick up for the Cavs.....in my opinion and I am a Cavs fan and live here close by Cleveland and Akron area. To me this is fine....League rules state that even team in rebuild must spend at least so much money under the salary cap in order to not look like they are tanking even though they are rebuilding.....so if you are forced to spend at least so much money under the salary cap to not look like your tanking when your rebuilding then why not sped some of it on a veteran like Mcgee who yes will be a solid shot blocking back up big man in Cleveland while he is there......Remember until the Cavs traded for Andre Drummond last year it had been forever since fans in Cleveland had seen them have a real enforcer who could block shots in the paint and intimidate. McGee now gives them 2 big men that can do that. But as most would say why would the rebuilding Cavs do this deal for a 32 year old.....well you see they got him for only two players on non guarenteed money. While Slphonso McKennie did show some potential and talent last year for them and I know I watch every Cavs game....and he also had success when in GOlden State the year before....the fact is at best he would only give the Cavs a decent young player who could serve a role off the bench if he fully reaches his potential. The Cavs also were given a future second round pick which in all honesty is like they were given a future lottery ticket or scratch off because the odds of finding even a player who becomes a solid regular for you in the second round historically is not so good. Many players have been 2nd rounders and had long careers and some even became all stars like Dennis Rodman but the truth is that most 2nd round picks dont even make their teams that drafted them and are cut loose after training camp...still the Lakers handed them a future 2nd for free just for taking McGee's contract and the Cavs now have a veteran shot blocker who yes will come off the bench but Koby Altman is not dumb.....his thinking in this deal is I get a future 2nd rounder up front for basically two players who are 2nd round pick talents and I also get the Veteran shot blocker who is on an expiring contract and because of that come playoff time ...contenders looking for a shot blocker or big man very well may be willing to throw me another pick for McGee at the trade deadline and so what does he have to loose. Even if McGee plays all year for the Cavs he is a free agent at the end of the year and the Cavs owe him nothing beyond this year and so they have nothing to loose and at worst have a future 2nd they wouldnt have had as well as a shot blocking big man that will be much better than a lot of big men in around the league taking up bench spots this season. One other thing...some may say why ask for a 2nd rounder in 2026 that is 6 years away.....well by then that 2nd rounder may turn into a very high pick in the 2nd round and have much more value in possibly landing a player who dropped from the first round. How so? Well in 6 years it is very doubtful that the Lakers will still be led by Lebron 36 years old this year James.....and so like all teams Lebron has played on in his career when he leaves it will start a painful and long rebuild in Los Angeles just like it did in Cleveland twice and in Miami.....so Koby Altman is thinking a 2nd rounder in 6 years will probably have much more value from the Lakers than a 2nd rounder say in the next couple years would......all in all...I think all teams involved between McGee and Gasol should all be happy with the outcome of all this player movement and that includes the Raptors.
