I got my dog from a shelter and he had worms and a bunch of other things and the horrible thing is that if he was there for longer they would have put him down and that’s disgusting you should never put down an animal if it can be helped

So many purebred dogs I know are such messes anyway, but I get why people have them. If you don't need a certain dog (like you did and like my friend with a purebred lab did) ABSOLUTELY use a shelter! I don't have dogs anymore, but my cats are all rescued. (Also Samoyeds are SO CUTE)

Sadly this isn't unique to the AKC. It seems to be a theme with kennel clubs across the world. I had a puppy as a child. He was bought from a "reputable" breeder registered with my national kennel club. That dog later died in my arms when he was just 3 years old. He had been diagnosed a few weeks earlier with a hereditary immuno disease. He had been put on medication but he took a turn for the worse in the middle of the night and passed away before we could even get him back to a vet. We did find out however that a dog dying of the condition that affected mine was something that should be reported to the kennel club as they would remove the breeder from their listings. We reported this case but the kennel club never took any action on it. I dread to think how many poor puppies have since had to suffer the way my boy did.

Hey thank you so much for doing this video. If you are willing it would be hella awesome if you did another video like this about the reptile/bird trade. Your channel has more reach than most reptile centric channels that talk about things like the rampant genetic issues like spider-ball morph and enigma syndrome, trafficking, and poor health conditions that lead to things like stick tail disease. Id be willing to provide some of my own research ive done on the exotic pet trade as it was kinda my senior project for college. Im in your discord so just let me know if its chill to hit you up

Dog breeds as a whole are fucked, it’s just inbreeding to the extreme. I dont like the concept of dog breeds, but the animals have done nothing wrong poor things. People should stop buying purebred dogs.

My family was in the same situation with my mother being very allergic to dogs. Luckily by chance we didn't get duped by a puppy mill. We know have two healthy dogs. Exepct the second dog which had a born disability that we did know about before purchasing. His testicles did not form outside of the body. He is fine and healthy however despite this.

A freind of mine is a breeder of older english Bulldogs. They are the most amazing dogs ever. Excluding two of them who have issues with leg humping. She is a wonderful breeder avoids inbreeding, gets dogs from other breeders to get new genetics, she keeps certain ones who are impaired ie eyesight,as their face wrinkles dig into their eyes in some of them. they aren't at all a puppy mill. If anything they treat their dogs like royalty. Remember always meet the people who have the dogs, the dogs parent's and the litter mates if possible. Make sure the conditions are good and clean. Make sure the dogs dont look malnourished or sickly

How can someone go to sleep at night knowing they exploit innocent animals designed to bring joy and happiness into their lives? If you can even look at a fucking raped, malnourished and injured dog and decide its good enough for more breeding you disgust me. The sheer fact they dont just fucking abuse dogs but also scam and dupe people who want a companion rocks me to my core.

@Indigo Blue Reputable Sammy breeders would test for Hip Dysplasia, eye, and cardiac exams. Which you could find out with a simple google search. I have yet to hear of a BYB that would put enough money in to get those tests. I am not sure about which breeder they went with, so I am not sure if they did these tests or not. Sure, maybe the eye and cardiac exam could be forged, but the records for HD tests (OFA/Penn/etc) are open to the public with the dogs identification card. If they refuse to show the records, bye-bye red flag. If they don't guarantee healthy puppies, red flag. If you are unsure of a breeder, talk to someone who bought from them before. Since this litter was in squalor, there is no doubt that others had the same experience. If buyers are kept private, red flag. Quality dogs usually have titles, no titles, red flag.

Honestly hearing your puppy story makes me both happy and sad. Sad that the poor thing had to go through it. But happy that he has such an amazing, sweet and caring owner. It's so good to hear that your little boy is being cared for thoroughly, giving him the best life they could in the time he does have. It is so upsetting that he and his siblings have to deal with such pain and of course with other dogs.

Puppy mills aside, pedigree dog culture is toxic as hell. I recently joined a group that advocates against extreme brachycephalic breeds (like pugs and bulldogs) and jfc the pedigree people get a n g r y when people suggest out-crossing to minimize the dogs' abysmal health conditions. As an example, someone posted a Frenchie with a longer (healthier) muzzle and people from a purebred Frenchie group were calling this /literal puppy/ disgusting, a freak of nature, etc. Obviously, selective breeding for utility absolutely has its uses (hypoallergenic like Casper, herding behavior for working dogs, etc.) But the culture of dog breeding for show is so incestuous and toxic that it's hurting the dogs they claim to love.

The whole "business" part about animals and the care of them is disgusting. I got a hamster recently. I had researched for it since the beginning of last year. Cage size, food, toys, etc. And I was appalled to find out, that not only do they make toys and wheels for hamsters that are not safe for them and can cause them harm, not only are these things approved by people who should know better. But the stores only sell the unsafe ones! My local pet supply store has 4 different hamster wheels. Not one of them is safe to use. Not to mention the food, the bedding materials, basically everything. And you know what the 18 year-old in the store said, when I pointed this out? "I'm sure it's fine. They wouldn't make it if it harms the animals". Well, guess what. They make it because people buy it.

I bought my Pit Bull and they said I’d get his papers in the mail, I’ve had him a month and still haven’t gotten his papers. The place I bought him from is down the street from my parents house and the owners of that place literally lives in the house behind us. Mando’s been healthy but I got a couple red flags that I’m only now realizing. 1) I never got his papers, he’s supposed to be a pure bred American Bully 2) I’ve seen American Bully’s his age, he looks too tall and too lanky to be one of those. 3) He’s got a bald spot on his head and some on his legs 4) I got him at 7 weeks and I can bet money he was taken from his mom earlier than 6 weeks especially since I shouldn’t have gotten him till he was 8+ weeks The ONLY good thing they did was pay for his first vet visit when I took him home but I had to see their vet, not mine and I had a 30 day return policy and if he died from parvo in 7 days from when I got him, they’d replace him.

I got all my dogs from a breeder at her home, we get my first 2 the same month, her house seemed somthing like a dog would like. Not to many dogs, many toys, no mess. But when we came to get my 3rd dog. There where dogs everywhere, they where not brushed, there was pee pads every where you look.the dogs looked so sad. My 3rd dog Bella witch is a pure bred pomorainen. She was in the corner crying with the worst hair. We took her home and she ran away from us, his under the table. And if you pick anything up over her, she would duck and cry. It hurts my soul that she went threw this abuse. She is glued to me now, if I even go for a second she will have a panic attack and cry for me, she probably got taken away from her mother to. It’s so sad that she has to go threw what ever abuse she went threw. I’m so happy that she’s safe and in a happy home with me.

About a year before me and my siblings were born, my mom and dad got a cute little Australian Shepherd puppy from a pet store. Her name was Madoline, and she was very sweet. Unfortunately, they didn't know the problems with buying from a pet store. She died when I was in preschool from a massive seizure. Changes in pressure in the air during storms caused them, and she dealt with them for all of her 8 years. One day, a big snow storm hit, and she couldn't handle the seizure that followed. She lived half as long as our other aussie, who lived to be 15-16, that we got from a rescue service. Now we know not to buy dogs, and now we have an adorable lab from out local shelter.

I work in "working dogs". Sled dog racing (its abusive AF, blair totally missed that when she talked about it) I don't think Blair really understands animal issues and is unqualified to talk about them lol. Her "working arctic breed" isn't that at all. It traces back to russia, sure, but its a modern designer breed with set visual traits. White and fluffy. The AKC, kennel clubs in general. Are ALL kinda bs. The samoyed dog breed is the result of a small group of dogs brought over from russia over 100 years ago, then just bred to be white and fluffy. The original population in Russia came in lots of different colors and were used for way more than pulling a sled. Youd call it something like a "siberian laika type" or somthing like that. Not a "breed" at all. They kept bears away and helped guard reigndeer. The name "sled dog" in general is sort of a misnomer and really just white people BS. I have even read that the name "samoyed" is a derogatory term used by russian people to describe certain native siberian peoples, like the Nenets. So the name "samoyed dog" might very well be a hurtful and racist name and the name "Nenet Dog" or "siberian Laika" might be more appropriate. Dogs just do stuff, any "breed" should actually shift over time if your are breeding it for a job like hunting or herding. The alaskan huskies of today bred for racing are smaller and faster than the ones from 100 years ago. And the alaskan husky isn't an AKC recognized breed at all. Thats because people who are breeding dogs to work don't really care about how the dog looks. Its all dumb. These are all moral issues with no real answers. I have worked around animals for years in working AND in rescue settings. Animals of ALL kinds. In general, I don't support buying animals. Period. Im sorta with Peta on that one. The question isn't as black and white as "how to find a reputable breeder?" Its way more complicated than that. But in general i thing breeding animals for profit is inhumane. (not talking about farming for food) Im going to start a channel talking about alot of this stuff. But im nowhere near as charismatic as blair. But I need to tell people that dog sled racing sucks. But that issue is far too niche lol and i have experience outside of sled dogs so might as well talk about other stuff as well. I am working on a video or 2 about Blair lmao

You buy from them even if it’s to save one means, the empty spot will just be filled by breeding new pups. So by buying a pup you make another puppy suffer in the previous pup’s position. Although it’s sad to see puppies not being saved from a bad condition, it’s the best way to stop the business.

I have three dogs currently: A first gen labradoodle called Kira who was part of an unexpected litter and once the family who owns her parents realized a poodle could breed with a labrador, they didn't have any other litter. I fell in love with her and adopted her at first sight when I visited the house she lived in. But due the lack of knowledge of how to treat a pregnant dog, Kira was born with A LOT of health issues. She couldn't get vaccinated until she was almost 8 months old because she had parasites and resistance to medicine. Basically what happened to Casper, but without eating her poop. She also has little white dots over her corneas. Then, my mom bought Apollo from a farm that sells bordercollies from time to time. They sold him cheap and I think he is the result of a cross between a female bordercollie and a fox. He has never had any medical issues. He just has his quircks and acts like a fox. Lastly, I have Cotufa, a purebred Cocker Spaniel who we rescued from the streets. It has been speculated that she was used to breed nonstop until she couldn't get pregnant anymore and then they threw her away. We don't even know her age. I love them to death. I just wanted to say that each dog is different, no matter where they come from.

This is part of why I intend to start breeding toy poodles. I'm a groomer and I have seen some god awful toy poodle puppies and adults. Poor breeding and poor conditions. I don't intend to register any of my dogs because not only does it mean nothing, a lot of people want to get dogs with paper because it's a status thing and they want to brag. I won't be docking their tails, either. My only worry is that with how goddamn picky I am, there won't be enough people I would be willing to sell to.
Jackie Gardner
Jackie Gardner 5 օր առաջ
@Len It seems whoever you were responding to has removed his or her comment, but from what little I could read in my notification, I will respond. Almost all poodle breeders are also groomers. Poodles are super high maintenance dogs and you would hardly even be able to make your money back if you had to take all of your poodles to another groomer each month. I decided I want to breed poodles because I have one of my own that I love dearly. He is very loving and intelligent. I have several medical issues and he's learned to tell me when I'm about to have an episode and even go get help. I will not breed him because not only is he too old and neutered, but he was the runt. I don't want to pass on his heart murmur, epilepsy or spinal deformity to any future dogs. I will likely quit grooming as a business due to my health issues when I start breeding poodles. Both together would simply be too much for me. I will groom my poodles and do the puppies first grooms, then refer them to a trusted groomer. So, there are good dog breeders out there, but you do need to be extremely careful who you buy from for all the reasons Blair listed. I bought my poodle from a breeder I knew before I even started looking for a dog. I went to her house and looked over the conditions all of her dogs were kept in. She even informed me that the poodle I had chosen was the runt and she was planning on neutering and keeping him for that reason. I convinced her to sell him to me and she only charged $75 for him (poodle puppies normally go for $700 - $1,700) and said I could bring him back and choose a better puppy if I wanted. I chose to keep the puppy I chose and have him to this day. He's an old man now and I love him so much he made me want to get into both grooming and breeding poodles. Find a dog breeder that breeds dogs for the love of a particular breed and ALWAYS look over their facilities in person before purchasing a dog. Do not buy from anyone that doesn't let you see their entire home and property. Some assholes will hide dogs in terrible conditions in their basements or barns and just show you two dogs they keep in good condition claiming that is their only breeding pair. Demand vaccination records, research, research, research and do not buy from anyone who is reluctant to answer questions or meet you at their kennels!

@UCzpV9BsG3P1ZCmvifh_IooQ With your attitude I’m sure no one’s words will easily change your mind but, breeding animals isn’t cruel nor is is bestiality (how the hell do you even get there). And having more ethical breeders does combat bad breeding, they’re there to make pets that are born in good condition (aesthetically and health wise). People would have choice to support good breeding instead of having to either go to bad breeder or adopt mutts (not always better than purebred and not compatible for everyone). How do you even want pets in the future to breed? Just cause the place you work in are unethical, doesn’t mean it’s bad everywhere. And if you want to talk about unrelated things and blair’s misunderstanding, yes I saw you talk about this too on another reply section, make your own comment. Get a better attitude if you want to discuss things properly.

Edit: I am so so sorry that little Casper and his littermates have to go through that. I wish you the best and I hope Casper feels better soon! You may have not intentionally rescued him, but I consider you to be his rescuer now with you taking such amazing care of him and giving him proper vet care and love. You and him were meant to be together. ❤ I wish people realized this about ALL animals. There's terrible backyard breeders and mills with every single domesticated animal. Birds, cats, rats, mice, hamsters, rabbits, ferrets, fish, reptiles, crabs, even insects for fucks sake. Now I have to admit, Im guilty of buying many animals(rodents mostly)from petstores and/or mills to try and rescue them. And I don't regret getting any of them, because they're my babies. But its definitely not the best idea. Please, with ANY new pet, before buying from a backyard breeder/mill/petstore, at least try first and look on craigslist or other rehoming sites to try and find animals that are being rehomed/in need of rescue, go to your local shelters and adopt, or find a reputable, trustworthy breeder.

Thats because a "good breeder" is subjective. All stuff about dogs, breeds, kennel clubs, ALL OF IT. Dog people are full of $h**. Her dog "samoyed" isn't a working actic breed. It TRACES BACK to working arctic dogs. Its the result of a small population dogs brought over from russia around 100 years ago and then bred to be white and fluffy. The original "siberian laika type" these natives used came in lots of colors and did way more than pull a sled. I have even read that the name "samoyed" might itself be a racial slur used towards the original keepers of the dogs. Like the Nenets. I love dogs, I care for them and train them professionally. Dogs are literally my life. They have to come from SOMEWHERE. Im still not convinced a reputable breeder truly exists. I can see 20 pitbulls bred and trained to hunt hogs living their lives on chains and see that as more humane and a wicked clean set up with someone breeding show winning German shepherds or what ever. Its all BS. Its all Subjective. Spay and neuter your pets. Adopt don't shop.

My past Shar-Pei came from a sweet old lady who was a breeder, but not just litter after litter. Sadly the mother dog hated the babies and pushed them away. Seeing Peachy trying too go towards "mommy" and being kicked away was fucking heart breaking.... The lady gave her to us for probably 400bux. No idea how much a Shar-Pei was averagely worth back in 2001, but she was so happy to have a loving family with me and my family and our older male Shar-Pei (they never bonded in the Having puppies way). He treated her like a little sibling.

I had something smilier but not nearly as bad happen to me, my first dog actually, she was a golden retriever and was fine at first, but was extremely over protective of me, and wouldn’t allow anyone even my brother into my room and would try to nip at them, so often I couldn’t have my friends over, she would also tear out our wallpaper in the house, and didn’t get along with our other dog, a smaller dog, we couldn’t keep as we didn’t have the money for someone to help us train her and help her besides medical bills, so we had to give her to a new family, luckily they were able to help her, and we were recently informed she’s a service dog so she does have a happy end and I’m glad. Another story is of another dog of mine, she had heart worms, our family tock her in as we were her last hope, she before hand lived in horrible conditions and ended up on the street somehow, I was never told the full story, but she was doing well, we moderated her activity so she wasn’t over working her self and risking punctures from the dead worms, but sadly, one did end up killing her really young, I don’t even have her for a full year, I was young my self and it broke my heart. There names were Flower and Sasha, Flower is still alive and we get regular updates from her family witch is so kind of them. This really hit home for me as I was able to relate with 2 experiences of my own. I’m happy we could get Flower a family who could help her, but I’m still sad I couldn’t of better helped Sasha, but at least she had a good year off the streets and away from her original owners/breeders.

Thats because its entirely subjective. If the way to help animals is to "adopt not shop" and to "spay and neuter your pets." Breeders are a group of people who DONT DO THAT. Breeding animals is selfish. Period. Doesn't make people bad or evil. We live in a capitalist society. But that doenst mean it isnt selfish. Its easier to frofit off of animals than it is to profit from helping them. And there are millions of them that need help.

If a breeder has a f-ton of documentation of health, testing, bloodline and doesn't make it easy for you to adopt, they are the ones to trust. To adopt from a proper breeder is like adopting a child.

People are so quick to judge about purchasing a dog. Obviously puppy mills are unethical for plenty of reasons but purchasing from a reputable, experienced, knowledgeable breeder is more than okay. I am still in grad school so I’m not in a position to get a dog right now but in the future I might have to purchase from a breeder because I developed a severe allergy to cats and dogs when I was 14. Luckily the dog my family and I rescued when I was 5 was hypoallergenic, but there’s no guarantee I’ll find another hypoallergenic dog at the shelter (although I do plan to look).

I had no idea raising puppies would be such a fight between owners (ranging from simple common-sensed people to the extraordinary caring and dedicated like you) and cruel breeders (ranging from simple (lucky?) businesses to horror places of neglect that would rival the kinds of places COVID-19 was born at) and it outlines how bad things could turn out for animals, pets and even humans in the future, and how useful getting informed by the subject by fantastic educative videos like this one 😀. Basic respect for life is common sense for some humans, but a tall order for a disturbing amount of them, causing millions of human deaths, even among the best of them, and this erodes trust in humanity in general. And if even the best humans struggle to survive in the System humanity created, what about their animal pets~ 🥺 ? Alas, as long as humanity is still half-mired in atrocity from capitalism's cancerous growth and hierarchical madness, and conflicts of interest born from all this neutering efforts to treat pets humanely, the only things owners can do is simply to *care about their pets however they can,* and as you did, be paranoid about anything that might have happened, because whoever bred the pet may have none of the common sense or respect for life their new owner (usually) does 🙄. And, as I'm still tearing up from having seen this, it's being a pleasure to see such effective and comprehensive awareness spreading through the web, allowing future and current pet owners to instill themselves with your powerful and heroic sense of respect for life, as it will not only save pets, but maybe even people and make the world a better place 😍✊.

This isn't a puppie mill story, but its related in one way or another. So, there was this, idk what you want to call it, ''chicken rescue'' that these people were running. I dont remeber everything about it, but I do know that they would take unwanted chickens, and sell them. Didn't matter what health condiots they had, they sold them. And it was found out that their entire flock they where selling where sick. And people had bought these sick chickens and put them in with their own flock.

I think one of the scariest parts of this video is that I got my little baby from the same Petland in Orlando Florida ( 35:38 is where the story is). Luckily, my puppy has no health problems, though he was neutered very young (which is not good). It pains me to see that the place I got my little bundle of joy from is the same place that excepts puppies from puppy mills. I should’ve done more research, but it’s hard to turn down a puppy when you fall in love with it. Hopefully more people find out about this and stop supporting pet stores that take in puppies from puppy mills (and things that hurt other animals). My heart goes out to all the families and doggos who have been hurt and affected by these puppy mills, they don’t deserve any of this.

I love Samoyed dogs!! I've only seen one in real life. I've bought 4 Bengal cats over the years and bought a Dachshund last year for my daughter because I love the breeds and have horrible allergies. Reputable breeders only. The only time you are in the wrong is when you abandon an animal. We aren't responsible for other peoples mistakes. Sorry, not sorry. I adopted a Tuxedo kitty boy that I love so much and have fostered many, many animals but buying pure bred is not bad if you do it responsibly.

I have 2 rabbits, one from petsmart and one from a random kajiji person... the first one was "about a year" when we got him. But it was disclosed to us that he has a sneezing problem... after purchasing absolute everything to take care of him we had no money to take him to the vet... then we got his brother (no problems with this boi♡). Then covid happened and its been over a year sence we got the first bun. He only just recently stopped violently sneezing (which I'm extremely happy about) but even tho its been a whole year he is still extremely antisocial... my so and I have done everything to bond with him but he's very skittish and doesn't like to be pet or held... they will both be going to the vet once covid is no longer an issue and neither of them are in critical condition, but it does make me sad to see that my first bunnum may have been mistreated ;-;

My boyfriend's family has an unfortunate history with breeders. One pug they had only lived for 2 weeks after they got her because she had severe liver problems and her liver failed. The bulldog they had lived for 6 months before her "brain became too large for her skull" and she had really bad brain swelling that couldn't be helped, so they had to put her down. Both of their male bullies ended up having gastric torsion (father and his son) because they weren't aware that bullies are prone to gastric torsion and some genetics can make it more likely in some dogs than others. The dad ended up passing away, but they were able to get the son to the vet in time, where they discovered why the father had passed away a year prior. I don't understand why they keep buying from breeders after these experiences.

My mom and I have adopted two bulldogs that were rescued from puppy mills. One was a very old boy that we named Wilber. Wilber had one eye, and we were told that was because the breeders who handled him washed his cage out with a high pressure power washer *while he was still inside* . He died in my mom’s arms around two months after we adopted him. Our second and current bulldog, Tallulah, has a protruding hernia on her stomach because they performed a c-section on her before she was even a year old. When we brought her home, she was absolutely TERRIFIED of everything. Those horrible people terrorize and abuse so many dogs. If there is a heaven or hell, I hope those people burn in the latter.

I’m sorry about Casper having such an entrance to the world but I’m glad he’s so well cared for. I’m a little surprised that people think nine weeks is acceptable for bringing a dog or cat home though honestly. My fluff buddy is pure bred though I didn’t expect to get her due to a parent with allergies. However a job only she could do required her hypoallergenic presence around the house. Thus she came to me at a bit over 12 weeks. The breeders did stuff like sending photos weekly once I put money down on her (and more). To me going for 8/9 weeks (especially with shipping involved) is now a red flag. Go for breeders who put in the effort, are willing to delay placement a week for said animal’s comfort, etc.

Honestly, as a young person trying to educate themselves this really helped. I wish this came out sooner before my family and I made a mistake buying from a pet store. I love all my dogs but they had problems. My one dog that is a yorkie has a dislocated leg and a defection on his back legs that make them weaker. My other dog had pneumonia. They both are happy and living life but they came to this world in pain and terrible condition. I wish we bought them from adoption clinic knowing all the fucked up stuff I know now. They are little balls of joy and knowing something traumatic happened in the beginning of their life breaks me. Please adopt and don't shop, this are bieng and we should not give money to scumbags who only see them as cash. Also don't only buy them because they are cute but actually for love and companionship. Thank you for reading ❤

really appreciate the opening of this video where you go over the work you put in when finding a dog that's right for you. my gf and i received SO much negativity while researching and waiting for our dog, juno. we were so lucky with her breeder and it made the entire thing a lot easier, but even my own family got on my case for going to a breeder. even shelters can be iffy if they're a big name like the humane society, and even then it's often not an immediate option people who HAVEN'T had a dog before should go for. it's really shitty, but puppies are PROFIT. people know it and will find any way to make folks looking for a puppy brush aside concerns. everything is about profit and unfortunately that extends to living things. from selling baby turtles on the side of the road to shipping in puppies cause a shelter needs money (and no one is buying the old dogs they killed without mercy). i'm so, so sorry for what you and your boy went through. it's a lot of anxiety finding the right things for your dog, and it really does take over your life in such a good way. i've learned so much from owning and caring for my dog not just about breeders and etc but dog training/behavior in general. breeders can be SUCH a blessing to a breed, gradually repairing what generations of 'appearance' breeding has done. additionally: never ever get teacup dogs. they are barely held together and often very inbred. rarely do they live past 2 years.

When we bought our new pup we worked with a breeder who worked with our vet. We heard that she breeds and does shows with amstaffs. When she finally bred our pup's parents, she sent us the whole family trees and medical histories of the parents. We continued to keep in touch with the breeder and went to see our pup when he was a few weeks old(we didn't take him home yet of course, just went to see the conditions and other dogs). When he was old enough, the breeder actually brought him straight to our yard, since the puppies got their first vaccines near our house. She then stayed around and chatted with us for an hour. She is also a big activist on regulating how dogs are bred in our country.

Thank you so much for sharing your and Casper's story. This may sound a little weird but hearing about all of the effort you put into taking care of Casper and the medicinal means of keeping him alive make me think of a mom who is desperately fighting for the life of her severely disabled or otherwise medically impaired child. I never received from my parents the kind of loving, warrior-esque attitude about my needs, personal struggles, and disabilities. It makes me so sad to think about how much my own childhood lacked compared to Casper the Friendly Floof's, but knowing how much love you have for your puppy and how much you fought for him gives me hope and assurance that I, a human being, deserve the same kind of love, care, and devotion from the people in my life.

You are a truly fantastic owner. You did your best to follow the proper avenues to find a reputable and ethical breeder, and I honestly can't think of a single thing you did wrong, especially since you couldn't exactly go see their facilities because you lived far enough that Casper had to be shipped to you. You did your best in a terrible situation for him, and I'm glad he's feeling much better comparatively. Sometimes breeders are the best option for people who need specialized animals for whatever reason, and I wish there weren't awful people using that title to manipulate people out of their money and abuse animals to make it easier for everybody in the situation who isn't scum--reputable breeder, customer, and dog. Thank you for sharing your experience with a bad breeder and the AKC's darker side.

I have this adorable 4 year old black cat who I named Pepper. He is my world and the sweetest little cat I’ve ever met and his high pitched meow is precious. He goes to sleep with my every night and appreciates any attention but when we got him from Pet Smart, he was sick. Couldn’t take poops and when he did they smelled AWFUL, he was lethargic and always slept, and had blood leaking out of his butt. Of course, we were worried! I mean this poor little sweet boy was in pain and felt awful so we got him checked out and he had intestinal problems. His stomach couldn’t handle food and it hurt a lot. We got him prescribed food and fed him syringe medicine, even gave him a prescribed pill once. He’s fine now and is the most playful, cuddly, sweet cat! He loves running around the house and has the biggest personality! Hearing Blair’s story about Casper really connected with me and Peppers situation, and I’m glad she has brought attention to this. :)

My first dog ever was from a pet store. My family finally decided to get a dog and my parents sadly are very stuck in their ways. So we all decided to visit a pet store as it was the easiest way to visit and see many different breeds to find one that we all like. (Side note they don’t sell dogs there anymore). We were all split on what we wanted then one of the employees there came and asked us what we were looking for. He let us visit with this one puppy that we honestly fell in love with. She listened, she was playful, everything. So we got her. I’m not proud of it but we did and honestly we got off lucky. She only had kennel cough, she’s the best dog I’ve ever known. But even then, I definitely didn’t want to support one again. I’m now a proud owner of an English Shepherd who I got from a good breeder who let me visit around their farm and visit all the dogs they had, which definitely made me happy and it thankfully was all good. My other dog is a German Shepherd mix who I adopted. It was supposed to be more of my husbands dog but she ended up clinging to me lol.

Thank you for this. I had a very similar experience. My baby has a deadly form of autoimmune anemia and her vet said she would likely die within a week. I have nursed her out of THREE episodes, and she is mostly happy and active though her medicine causes side effects. I wish so bad i knew before i got her. We got the "accidental mating" scam and by the time i traveled to another state to pick her up, i ignored the red flags when the person wouldnt invite us in or anything, and i could hear lots of barking. I knew for sure when i got her home and she would grab a peice of food out of her bowl and run and hide with it instead of eating at the bowl like a normal dog. She STILL does this because she was bullied as a baby.
