The Charismatic Voice

Ամիս առաջ

Okay. Ronnie James Dio is my new obsession. I was blown away with "Heaven and Hell" and instantly put Rainbow on my list. This exceeded all expectations. His vibrato, showmanship, tone and timbre. . . this man had it all, and we're going to see SO MUCH MORE!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Rainbow for the first time, performing "Stargazer".
Performed by Rainbow - Words and Music by Ronnie James Dio and Ritchie Blackmore

Elizabeth. I am truly enjoying your reaction to Ron. Also everyone commenting, he truly loved you all very much . I was lucky enough to have toured with him for the last 15 years of his life and and now a board member of the Ronnie James Dio Stand up and shout cancer charity. Please always keep his music alive. Share with your children. Know that over and above all of your amazing comments he was the most amazing human being I've ever met in my life. On the road Ron taught us that nobody was more important to the show than anyone else.the only difference between him and everyone else was he was the only one that could do his job.take some time and search dio by decade. I love you Ron you are hugely missed. Big Scott

Scott, Ron and his work, which obviously includes you... Made a tremendous influence on me, as well as many of my friends. The music I'm working on lately is in a much heavier direction, but I absolutely hear you, Ron and Ritchie in myself as I write. All of you, and the entire back catalog, have truly created something that will never die. And I'm a better musician for having heard it. The influence may not be obvious, but nobody... NOBODY in metal today can say that they haven't put a bit of your work, Ron's, Ritchie's... into their own. My black metal may never sound like this, but without you guys, the things I'm writing wouldn't exist. Thank you, brother.

There's a great youtube video out there titled the evolution of ronnie James Dio take a watch it'll give you most of the band names to search for. You'll hear Ron at the edge of every version of rock and roll through the years I'm glad you've found his music and have plans to share with your own kids

Metalheads were so lucky back in the 70's and 80s. Dio, Halford, Coverdale, Plant, Dickinson, and yes Ozzy too. Some of these guys could sing too. Every singer, present and future could stand to learn many lessons from these people. I was so lucky to see RJD when he visited Australia just a few months before he passed. To see one of my idols so close up, giving his all as usual. Stage presence personified! I very much doubt we'll ever see another vocalist with such a talent for the dramatic.

Black Sabbath: Sign of the southern cross. It's one of Ronniess best vocal performance, if not the best. Another thing you should be listening to is Hear N' Aid - Stars which was a project from the metal scene to rise money for the famine in Africa in 90'es (Do they know it's christmas & We are the world metal style) with all the top metal singers at the time.

This is a much better song to evaluate than Heaven and Hell LIVE. It's pretty lit. Rainbow was a 70's band, so there's a lot of long songs on their albums, and a great deal of instrumentals. This is an interesting piece, because the high note sustains are sometimes long, he's gotta keep that energy pretty high for a long time, but I guess that's why it's good that there are so many instrumental breaks. I wouldn't recommend looking at it, necessarily, though, because you don't really get a huge range from the vocals. It's still mostly sing-speaks, but it does have some mighty high energy moments. Not sure if you'd see my comment on the other video, so copying the rest, here, as well, to include my best recommendations. You might want to checkout the LIVE version of his Philadelphia performance of "Don't Talk to Strangers", here: am-posts.info/list/pcuny3K9wancgJQ/video To my knowledge, this is the highest quality performance Dio ever gave, which was caught on video. That's really his best LIVE performance. DTTS is also a bit of a sing-speak, but it's still a great performance worth looking at. In terms of tracks... some of his most vocally significant songs would be: All the Fools Sailed Away Faces in the Window My Eyes Jesus, Mary, and the Holy Ghost This is your Life As Long as It's Not About Love Die Young The Sign of the Southern Cross Falling Off the Edge of the World Too Late Catch the Rainbow Sixteenth Century Greensleeves Starstruck Stargazer A Light in the Black Long Live Rock 'n' Roll Gates of Babylon (there's actually a great LIVE performance of this, here: am-posts.info/list/1NidrZnAx6O1kKA/video) Kill the King Rainbow Eyes Lots of great songs, by Dio, so it's tough to sort through them all, with just pure vocal performance in-mind. Dio was as good a composer as he was a singer, and so he's got probably more quality tracks than any other rock performer, I'd guess. If I had to pick, I would say that the very best vocal pieces would be: Rainbow Eyes This is your Life Too Late All The Fools Sailed Away (great video for this: am-posts.info/list/09SYmGDep6y3roo/video) A Light in the Black Die Young (king of the bangers... video, here: am-posts.info/list/tZu7q6CtyoOTg4Y/video) If I had to pick the best vocal ballad and banger, it'd be: Rainbow Eyes Die Young If I had to pick the most vocally diverse piece, overall, it'd probably be: All the Fools Sailed Away I discovered Dio when I was about 12yrs old. (31, now) Contrary to popular culture barely anyone knew who Dio was, until he died. If you look at the data trend on this screenshot, you can see that his popularity skyrocketed around his death, probably exceeding the popularity he had over the previous 20yr period: prntscr.com/12mvuzk I actually started down a path of vocal performance, initially because of the power Dio sings with. There's only a handful of singers who are remotely in the same league, if you really compare and consider. A couple times per year, I'll re-visit some songs, because of the excellent vocals and compositions, but unfortunately, I don't listen all that much anymore, because of the dark themes and satanic messages. People are always saying "oh, he was such a nice guy!"... LoL He wrote things like "the door is never open to the child without a trace of sin", or how about "Holy Spirit, Holy Ghost, is hiding in the dark", or how about "Don't go to Heaven, it's really only Hell", or how about "I am wicked, I am Legion". (we could go on, and on) Most fan-talk is just a repeat of what people started saying right after he died... I kid you not... many of those statements never existed until then. It's literally still trending. (pft) He was a great singer, legendary, and a phenomenal composer... but the guy was also an Anti-Christ. Just read his lyrics, and look at his album covers. (my gosh) A lot of "vocal person reacts to XYZ" videos are EXTREMELY cringeworthy, and this is one of the few I've been able to get through, and actually enjoy. So... well done... (haha) You need some pieces with more huge moments to comment on, though. (this one had some sweet wails, though) Anyways, thanks for reading, and best to you... :)

The singers on that song were Ronnie James Dio, Geoff Tate, Rob Halford, Vince Neil, Blackie Lawless, Kevin Dubrow, and Don Dokken and several others I can't think of at the moment

I hope people understand that Ronnie Dio's technique was LIGHT YEARS beyond opera technique. Classical singers couldn't dream of doing what he did, or Steve Perry, or Whitney Houston etc. They do the OPPOSITE of classical singing technique, which if you think about it, is archaic and antiquated in the modern era of microphones and P.A. systems. Outside of the Opera world, those techniques are mostly useless.

There are so many comments that I’m not sure anybody commented that the music is actually the studio version from the Rising album. So all the perfection, orchestration, reverb and probably double tracked vocal was done in studio and coupled with live & video performances. Nonetheless Stargazer & Gates of Babylon are the pinnacles for Rainbow.

It sounds to me more like he's using tremolo (from the diaphragm rather than the throat). Actually, he's using both at different times. When I'm improvising a guitar lead, I don't think about the technique or the notes. It's too much for the conscious mind to process. I'm thinking about a feeling. So, if I'm trying to capture the sound of a certain artist, I don't focus on playing the notes, but the feeling behind the notes. It's like that with any habit or anything, such as driving a car, for example. It becomes automatic.

Ronnie said as a kid, he would listen to an Italian American opera singer called Mario Lanza with his parents. And in the late 60’s he sang in a doo wop group. So that’s where he got his soul and swing grooves. Just a tornado of inspiration which led to his epicness. Not a missed note this guy had.

Elizabeth, your comment at the start of the guitar solo. the minor harmonic scale associated with Arabic music, Well Ritchie Blackmore had always been fascinated with medieval and 16th century music which had Arabic influence and this started in his last 2 Deep Purple albums but came out most strongly in the first 2 Rainbow albums.

You could mention his name in the same sentence as Paul Rodgers and David Coverdale. Ronnie James Dio sang on three of the seminal rock albums , each with a different band. It's extremely difficult to choose any particular song for you to listen to because so many are so amazing. My personal recommendations are : 1. Lady of the lake from Rainbow. 2. I from Black Sabbath . 3. Falling off the edge of the world, again Black Sabbath. 4. Holy diver by Dio ( The band ) and , 5. There isn't just one song that exemplifies how great a singer Ronnie James Dio was. There are so many! My wild card pick of Dio songs to review would probably be 'I Could Have Been A Dreamer'. I recently heard that song for the first time in many years. Not one of his better known songs. But there was always something about the way he sings the chorus in that song that resonates w/ me. Would definitely recommend checking that one out. \m/ \m/

Classical music was metal before electricity. RJD is awesome to sing along with and mirror his technique! PS- Love your excitement! You know he was italian and growing up listened to a great deal of opera, and was influenced vocally by American tenor Mario Lanza. I always thought he sounded like he would have followed that path in a different time.

If it hasn't already been suggested for you to critique, check out Ronnie singing "Gates Of Babylon!" It too is a masterpiece! I must say, I saw your review of the song,"Painkiller," Rob Halford and Judas Priest. If you really want to hear Rob at his true best, from the Album, "Stained Class," you ABSOLUTELY MUST listen to the songs: "Exciter" as well as "Beyond The Realms Of Death." Both the "Stained Class" versions and the versions from the Priest Live Album, "Unleashed In The East," will allow you to hear Rob Halford at his prime. Those songs, both done in the 70's, are what propelled Halford to his Nickname, "The Metal God!" I hope you get the opportunity to truly hear these two songs. Prepare to be absolutely astonished! I enjoy your Videos so thank you very much for recognizing another masterful Musician and Vocalist, Ronnie James Dio. R.I.P. Ronnie.

He's been the singer on and off, and I've only heard his early stuff.. search youtube for 'msg one night at budokan' and you'll find great music!
