It's YYZed. Believe it was from some sort of transmitter radio thingy in a light aircraft that Alex was flying. makes a cool beeping sound. In that funky timing. Neil heard that and said I have an idea. YYZ is the IATA airport identification code of Toronto Pearson International Airport, near Rush's hometown. The band was introduced to the rhythm as Alex Lifeson flew them into the airport. A VHF omnidirectional range system at the airport broadcasts the YYZ identifier code in Morse code. Peart said in interviews later that the rhythm stuck with them.[3] Peart and Geddy Lee have both said "It's always a happy day when YYZ appears on our luggage tags."[4] The piece's introduction, played in a time signature of 10 8, repeatedly renders "Y-Y-Z" in Morse Code using various musical arrangements.[5][6] "YYZ" rendered in Morse codeYYZ- . - -- . - -- - . . Wiki explains it better :)

I've been playing drums for over 50 years, and have been a Rush fan for nearly that long, and I still have never figured out the middle section of Jacob's Ladder. As a matter of fact, I'm not even sure Neil played it the same live as he did on the album!

John's pic for countdown brings me this story to tell... For nearly 40 years I listened to Countdown... imagined what a launch would be like... played that RUSH song over and over and over.... I got my pilot's certificate when I was older. Studied science in school... I actually saw Discovery just before its maiden flight in 1984 as it sat on the pad weeks before its first flight. I vowed then as a small child I would return to see Discovery fly, witnessed in person. Well I got to see a shuttle launch, in person, from the VIP seating at the Saturn V building. 3 miles from the launch pad. It was STS-127, Endeavor's launch. I was now 39 years old. I was pumped... I listened to Countdown over and over leading up to the launch... and now here I stood 3 miles from the pad waiting to see my first ever launch with Neil's descriptive words in my head "a thunderous roar like the whole world exploding... Scorching blast of golden fire as it slowly leaves the ground ... tears away with a mighty force as the air is shattered by the awesome sound" 5-4-3-2-1 .... nothing..... then the golden fire... ok here it comes, the thunderous roar... nothing.... just a distant rumble.. so I waited... again... just a little louder, but not much... a rumble... like the sound of distant thunder from a far off storm. That's it? That's all the sound there is? From 3 miles away? OMG talk about anti-climatic... It was NOT AT ALL how Neil described it. No thunderous roar... No air being shattered by the awesome sound..... just a distant rumble. But.. and this is a BIG BUT.... the blast of golden fire.... now that was VERY ACCURATE!! It was like a Golden welding arc... it was so bright it blinded us, in the day light. So that was very true.. but the sound.. that was a disappointing thud... nothing but a rumble. Maybe the wind blowing away from us had something to do with sound? Who knows? But it was Not loud at all.

Here’s something fun. Make a 12 track single CD (80 minutes or less) Rush CD using only tracks in the correct order on their respective album. For instance, if you use Tom Sawyer as track one then you can use no other track ones. I’ll start. 1. Subdivisions 2. The Analog Kid 3. Red Sector A 4. La Villa Strangiato 5. The Camera Eye 6. Natural Science 7. Losing It 8. Between The Wheels 9. Headlong Flight 10. Cold Fire 11. Wish Them Well 12. The Garden This is very hard.

I certainly love all the Rush songs listed here, but was a bit disappointed in the 'greatest hits gotta be included' aspect. I personally don't think those are as interesting because those songs are already so celebrated. I would've preferred a deep cuts list personally, since it would've given more insight on the tastes of these participants, which is why we viewers are here in the first place! I know, useless complaints. It was a fun show regardless. Here's my obligatory list, and I'm giving myself 5 since it's just in the comments section on AM-posts hhaha: 1) Vital Signs - so imaginative in combining genres, super cool minimalist drum parts in the verses, fantastic fat bass sound and part, ambitious guitar voicings. And incredibly inspiring and uplifting melodies, just all around an amazing song. 2) Bravado - Soaring, majestic, powerful 3) Clockwork Angels/ The Anarchist - So inventive, fantastic playing, great hooks, and yes I'm cheating by putting both together 4) Beneath, Between, Behind - Just Rocks, and super cool young man lyrics 5) Middletown Dreams - I could listen to this song on repeat all day. So poignant, so beautiful. And a great bass solo! This was very difficult. No The Pass, no Show Don't Tell, no Dreamline, .... no Fountain of Lamneth, (espcially The Bridge)!! Oh well.

When Neil died the first thought that came into my head was.. Mike Portnoy. Yes we are all crushed by the loss. But the time for Geddy and Alex is also short. This is the show that comes close to what I imagine sitting in my living room, as folks randomly look at my Sci-Fi/Fantasy Artist Portfolio & Making-Of Movie Books (especially Portnoy being the movie aficionado ;), and reaching in to play Lp's and CD's in my collection, while having drinks, snacks and talking about our fave albums and bands currently on our radar, but especially all things RUSH (and I'd get into my other fave band, Kansas). That was fun! And I would have not minded at all if this went on for 2 or 3 hours. Its not that I don't have a life :p but my life is FILLED with music, and love to share with like-minded people . . . just don't eat all the snacks! :D Please bring the guys back for another session, its always cool to hear how Rush played an important role in their love of music, and striving to be the best they can be. Also . . . I created this Playlist in early 2020 for those uninitiated to Rush, to share, and for anyone to listen to on the go, with some fun and "unusual" stuff in-between: am-posts.info/zone/PL2DU3TBNutEeeEPVH9hfmfMJpscrYoBh0.html (more details in the description of the playlist) - Thanks again!

They did a cover of YYZ as their first recorded song... they don’t exist except for Rush. Dream theater is ok (maybe 2 great albums but so much of it is just stupid). They are like knats on the ass of Rush and their praise is far far far to faint. The hubris of minor rock stars - they owe EVERYTHING to Rush.

Marathon is my current favorite song it just brings me back to my highschool years, very nostalgic. I love the middle instrumental part with the powerful keyboards. My all time favorite song of any band is Red Barchetta and they pretty much covered why. My ultimate Rush Album: 1.-Xanadu 2.-Red Barchetta 3.-Mission 4.-The Pass 5.-Marathon 6.-A Farewell to Kings 7.-The Trees 8.-Cygnus X-1 9.-Time Stands Still 10.-The Big Money 11.-Tom Sawyer 12.-Natural Science

But the thing that botters me so much, is the lack os 90's choice on the most Rush fans, when they pick their favorite songs or albuns... Mike I know you said that in NY “Rush was our band” , and I get that sentiment,, but make no mistake. Being from Toronto, they were, and will always, be OUR BAND. So don’t forget that. No love for Something For Nothing? Too bad. If not for the first side of 2112, I think it is the best song on the album. A little too hard for a radio hit, but always sounds great live on the bootlegs of the 2112 to the Hemispheres tours. A song that also sounded better to me live on the Hemispheres tour than on the 2112 studio album. Geddy's vocals sound more in control in his phrasing live on that tour than on the studio album.

Marathon, along with the rest of Power Windows is my go-to choice for RUSH listening. Very sentimental. I met my wife in '85, graduated in '85 etc. I love the booming lower end foot pedal synths and textures in those songs. As an amateur drummer, I think Neil's drums were perfectly produced. His snare really "cracked" and cut through. His 24 inch bass drums were up front in the mixes. Just a great sounding album altogether.

I remember Paul McCartney in an interview saying he didn't like medleys. I can totally understand that. The idea is either play the song or dont play it. Go big or go home. I think Rush figured that out too. Especially when they started doing " An Evening With" concerts with no opening act. At that point they no longer needed to do medleys for the most part. Ok on Vapor Trails they sort of did with By Tor/Cygnus/Working Man. But at least they played big portions. On R40 they did a lot more of Cygnus book 1

I totally agree. I'm lovin Presto more and more as I get older. Loved it when it came out too. Still sounds solid and fresh today. A Show of Hands too.
