Driving is awesome! But beware, i made so many mistakes in my youth cheif among them was driving sleepy thinking my attention to the road would keep me awake. I WAS SO WRONG and the semi trailer i ran into never even felt it. But I did. Driving is awesome but its also a real responsiblity.

This is one of those videos where I could care less about the logs, and how they are doing what they are doing. Instead, watching a man teach his son, and his son being so respectful and willing to learn is what this is all about. This is amazing and more of what the world needs. Awesome video!

I recommend crossing your safety chains on the trailer when hooking them to the truck. This method provides a cradle for the tongue to fall in should the trailer dislodge from the ball.

One tip for jack, to stop from doing all the little corrections while driving, distance your line of sight, look further down the road or at the horizon. Biggest help when I learned to drive tractor trailer. It’ll stop you from swaying the wheel back and forth, over all great job!!!

Charles Raines23 օր առաջ
Also with heavy loads you should “cross” the trailer safety chains so if the hitch was to come undone the chains would hold the trailer tongue so that it might not dig into pavement or dirt.
Crazy Coyote23 օր առաջ
Well done jack!! I thing two small logs underneath the logs could give you the space to slide straps or chains underneath, for unloading at Home.

Your teaching him the way I like to teach. Think about it. You make a decision, and give it a go. If you need to adjust you'll know as you start to pull it out. I'll also give suggestions only. Try with caution, get experience, then trust your experiences and instinct's. Hands on is the very best teacher, but slow. Rigging the log from the bottom also allows you to pick it up some so the log front is not plowing into the ground letting it slide. I pull it out then shorten the chain to get closer to lift it some. I skid with my Kubota L3800. I have a draw bar for the 3 point I designed that allows me to wrap the end on the draw bar then just drop the chain in a hook that's part of the draw bar. With tension it locks like the hook on the chain to the chain. I front pull it clear form where it was cut then back up where the draw bar is almost over the end of the log re-rig the chain short to the top of the log, then to the draw bar, lift the draw bar just enough so the end of the log is off the ground and in 4 wheel 1st gear I can safely pull a log like the one on your trailer through the wood, fields and anywhere I want with minimal ground damage as it is now sliding and following. We all have to find out what works for us. I do this all alone so if I get hurt in the woods I could be out of luck. I make my own luck by being wise not smart. Smart can get you injured or killed. Wise is experience, instinct and caution.

Want a tip from the east coast? Throw a fence post (roller) under the log as it coming off the trailer, it’ll keep it from digging in, another at the back as she drops. Keep it off the ground, cleaner/dryer, you’ll pick up easier and you’ll get your choker off easier.

Twisting the safety chains to shorten them weakens the chain and is a DOT violation. You should shorten your chains to the appropriate length for the tow vehicle. I didn't notice if they were crossed under the tongue and hitch, but the should be, as well as always having a pin in the coupler on the trailer. I'm not trying to be a hero, but it is valuable knowledge for Jack

JACK, My Stepdad taught me to place my left foot touching the the outside of the truck(by the emergency brake) and imagine my foot was reaching through and touching the centerline. Also keep glancing at the outside left rear view and keeping the left trailer wheel a couple of inches from the centerline of the road. Also do the same on the right side trailer wheel to outer line. Once you find the right edge of the road find a spot on the hood or wipers to line up with the right line in front of the truck (while you are sitting relaxed) Use these in combination and you will know exactly where your truck and trailer are at all time. Which will avoid fear. Also don’t hold the steering wheel so tight it turns your knuckles white. Hope this helps you. Ask your dad to help explain these ideas.

1st gen Cummins is a 12 Valve, 1998 2nd gen Cummins is when they came out with the 24valve, you’re in Oregon. I’m from Cali and I could definitely help you find a 2nd Cummins for less then 10k in your area, if you’re willing to spend up to 12k then you could find a really nice 2nd gen. If you want to spend between 10k and 20k then we can find you a nice 3rd gen. No more locking up for 4x4 drive. Just switch it and go. Strait axle Cummins will out last any Ford or Chevy. Especially with the way you take care of things. Let me know. I can definitely help you find something in your area. Instead of spending 30k on a 1st gen you could spend that on 4th gen 6.7 Cummins. Thats currently what I have and have ZERO issues with it. But mine is a manual. The automatic definitely are a lot more finicky if you tune them and make them quicker. But for you being that you would probably leave it stock you wouldn’t have problems with the automatic. We could find you a manual of any generation,1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th gen. Just get back to me if you’d like some help!!!
