Why wouldn't schools advice parents what's best for the child? This was so sad and I'm hoping there is better help for both.

What a wonderful film! A friend of mine has a daughter who is deaf, and they had to struggle with the school for the simplest things, such as teacher facing the room to say, "Page 163." Huge applause to Rachel Shenton, who I only saw for the first time in "All Creatures Great and Small."

The Silent Child - it's not about the child alone (who cruel the family was) - it's also about the actress - extremely brave - (in the film) - The star actress is the deaf little child, not understood until she came in. By she I mean an actress who understands to be around a loved deaf person. Kudos and 💖💖

78%???!!!! How SELFISH can people possibly be?! Leaving your child with no way to communicate is abusive! How can they expect her to communicate in a way that suits THEM, when that's impossible for a deaf child to do? "She follows along with what WE'RE saying really well". But what about what SHE wants to say? I can't believe there are parents out there who would do this to their child.

At the very least one should learn the hand alphabet as it isn't really very difficult and ironically once you do and you're around deaf people that don't speak then you're the one having to play catch-up because they are ahead of you in sign language.

Think maybe both lip leading and signing are good But to take away something she is clearly understanding and seems happier to do; is unproductive and rather mean......I think parents really need to evaluate the child's needs more Both emotionally and physically....The young girl was a great actress; whether or not shes deaf in real life.......like the programme says Deafness is not a learning difficulty to hear the grandma say Will she be able to get a job is insulting to all deaf people!! They can do anything we can do..............:)

I'm a parent, and a grand parent, in my late 70's. In this situation, it wouldn't be a case of 'one or the other' regarding teaching my child communication skills. For me, it would be all possible methods! If necessary, and it probably would be, I'd also be with the sign teacher learning simultaneously. I'd have to start at the same level. I've also lost 80-90% of my hearing, and get by with lip/body reading to augment my verbal communication, so I can partly understand and empathise with the girls problem with others. What I actually hear, and what my brain gives me by filling in the gaps, is significantly different. Occasionally it gives me something hilariously wrong! Rarely, at other times, with no previous conversation to get me started, I just cannot understand. Their speech is just 'gobbledegook! I have to ask for a repeat, and after the third attempt, ask them to rephrase what they are saying. In addition, to complicate things, I found out at around 55-60 years old, that I'd been dyslexic all my life. That went a long way to explaining some of the problems I'd had at school, where some fools of teachers had labelled me, ''lazy!'' (Eventually, I came top of my secondary school in Science, and several other subjects.) I've had people make sarcastic comments, regarding my present hearing difficulty, but usually ask them if they would say that to a blind person, if not, then why say it to a deaf person? I know this 'Short' is a dramatization, but if, as said, it reflects the reality in many families, then the parents should be utterly ashamed, and social services should make a point of compelling the parents to see that their deaf child receives ALL possible help. .

My parents were the same, they just got bad advice and were against sign language. They loved me just the same though and just talked real slowly. Sign language would have been handy in picking up girls in college though, nobody likes dating anyone who can barely grunt out his ABC's like a neatheral.

This was a hard one to watch. My biological children (all 4 of them) had hearing difficulties. Thankfully, their hearing was restored with a simple surgery that repaired the eardrum. I still remember my oldest going home from the hospital kept looking around as we walked to the car. She kept asking me what was that. I didn't know what she was talking about. After a little more questioning, we determined that she had heard a bird singing for the very first time. I knew that she had problems before but didn't realize it had gotten to this extent. I sat in the parking lot and held her and cried. Even now those tears of happiness slow down my cheeks. Thank you for the short. I'm glad it won an award and has been posted here. That day with my daughter was one of the happiest I've ever had.

Don't worry my dears, there will be a continuation of that movie! There you can see that Libby's brother is so shocked about the situation that he will just break with his career and learn to become a deaf Therapist. In that course he will teach his sister the sign language and help her to grow. Because of that the family will get so mad, that Libby and her brother will move out into a small apartment to get rid of this toxic environment. You will see - great crisis make great people!!!

There was a little deaf girl I used to work with in equine therapy. I remember the very first day of class like it was yesterday. She wanted to know her horse’s name. I tapped her on the shoulder and signed, “Sunflower.” Her face light up when she realized that I could speak her language. She burst into a flood of signing- by far more than I could keep up with! I had to tell her to slow down and say it again. She wanted to know what the other horse’s name was. “Bear.” Why does Sunflower have a purple lead rope??? Well, I think that’s her favorite color. On and on we went. These kids are humans too- they deserve no less than the other groups out there yelling for their rights.

Lord, give them eyes to see. Let children have options that need special assistance and help. It is very challenging for them. Surround them with supports and help in areas they need. Life is different for them and we have to support them, they should not be "lost". The hardest part is many families are dsyfunctional like hers. Parents don't see their child, invest in their child and make discouraging statements, not encouraging words and engagement.

I had a friend then a younger cousin who were deaf. Nobody around these kids ever bothered learning sign language. I think it should be counted as a second language from primary onwards. I thought the basis to my daughter. Can't find a school that teaches it. What a blast.
