Learned the exact same technique from the magazines never really did anything much with it because I never really put any discipline or practice into it to sound like the song in the beginning of the video, Van Halen ,Satriani or Vai, The real trick here is to learn the actual notes that the pinches produce ,on different areas of the string, Night Ranger did some cool stuff with it as well...

I'll help everyone a little more, as it wasn't covered in this video. Your pickups play a part in where you have to pinch for the harmonic to ring out. I've found (for me atleast) it's much easier with humbuckers than single coils, and when you are learning, experiment with hand position. When I first started, I would sorta hit the right place, but could never get it perfect, after watching other people play I noticed that not just how they were holding the pick, but how they were positioning their hand would also make a difference.

1. ALWAYS use the bridge pickup, it's way easier that way. 2. As you change the fret position on the left hand, you also have to change the spot where you hit the string with your right hand. Think of it just like a regular harmonic, the only difference being that you're producing the sound with your right hand, instead of your left hand.

I haven't touched a guitar in many years unfortunately, but I used to do pinches by kind of doing a twist with the pick.. like on the thicker strings I was sort of scraping across the texture of the string a bit. That usually worked. Probably made my finger hit the string a little while doing that twist.

I found it easier to dived the string into fractions, more fractions you'll make between the bridge and your fretting finger with your thumb = higher pitch. Also more fractions requires higher precision to pull it off. But looking at it like this your can tell exactly which fret to pinch to get the harmonic.

I've been trying for ages and I kinda get a harmonic or something when I touch the string very gently and briefly after plucking, but it doesn't sound anything like as high pitched or sqeally as when you do it in the video. EDIT: I'VE CRACKED IT! In case anyone has the same guitar pickup arrangement as me (one humbucker at the neck, one at the bridge), switch your pickup selector to the bridge only. I did it and all of a sudden I started finding the pinch harmonics.

I actually stumbled onto pretty much the same technique when I was trying to teach myself pinch harmonics. I was using my middle finger to sort of "pinch" the string between it and my pick. So kinda like artificial harmonics on a classical guitar, but between the pickups. I still sometimes play them that way.
Allen Lark

So there's no actual pinching??? It's just regular touch harmonics. I'm so mad. I thought there was some magic mechanical thing I didn't understand. If I had known it was just regular harmonics but on the right hand...

I learned it by accident and mastered it quickly. However, I almost never use it and I really hate the way Zakk Wylde overuses it. It's great in the opening riff of this video, though, which I think is Randy Rhoads. He used it sparingly and tastefully.

I'm a physicist, and in physics, there is the idea of a thing called 'a standing wave". There are two types- one, like sound, where there is an oscillation in pressure (longitudinal), and the other, like a string, bouncing up and down (transverse). Just google the bracketed terms to see diagrams of what I'm talking about, you'll get it when you see it. I had never heard of pinch harmonics before, but based on my understanding of transverse waves, and running my guitar through a spectrum analyser, I could see the fundamental frequency (the note being played), as well as several harmonic frequencies above it. I figured, "well, if the first harmonic has a node at the center of the string, and the fundamental frequency doesn't, then if I place my finger on that node, then the oscillation of the fundamental frequency will cease, and the net displacement of the string at the node is zero, so I should hear the first harmonic only". Of course, the some nodes of the upper harmonics don't align, so you can pick and choose which ones you want based on the location of your finger. And that is how I learnt how to use pinch harmonics. Usually only use it to adjust intonation.
Liege of Shadows
Liege of Shadows Օր առաջ
Yeah. What I understood of that made sense. The difference between a "bright" sound and a "dark" sound is how loud those upper frequencies are. With a dark sound, you're limiting the volume of those higher harmonics in the fundamental sound. A bright sound opens up those higher harmonics. So, "bright" kind of just means "more frequencies" in this context. In addition to what you said, a pinch harmonic essentially limits the lower frequencies manually. While I wouldn't consider it "bright" because it's limiting sound, it's taking those higher tones and bringing them to the forefront of what is audible.

I figured out how to make pinch harmonics a while ago, but for some reason it's a technique I never managed to master, after years it's still hit and miss, half of the time I'll get it to sound perfect but other times it either sounds like a normal note(not enough thumb) or will be too muted(too much thumb). It also depend where I do them, for some reason I struggle with the low 6th string. I guess it has something to do with the way I hold my pick, I always used a 3-fingers grip, similar to James Hetfield

I don't know if it's related, but there are spots where you can do harmonics right in front of the middle of the guitar's body. For an acoustic guitar, these spots are somewhere in the middle of the sounding hole. It's easy to find them; just try to do harmonics (as you might do on the 12th fret) in different spots until you find them. By the way, great video! I'll surely try today! There's an AC/DC solo (You Shook Me) where you need to use pinch harmonics, and I was never able to pull them off, so I simply played the fretted note with no harmonic :-/ Time to level up!

I Just choke up on the pick so my thumb naturally grazed the string. That might be what you're saying but yeah just choke up on the pick to where the pick is barely sticking out. Once you get used to it you'll be able to manipulate the position of your thumb more easily and won't have to choke up on the pick as much 👌
