I'm in the process of watching all of your videos. Thank you for the information and inpiration! You may already be familiar with Mors Kochanski but, if not, you should grab a copy of his book "Northern Bushcraft," and anything else by him. And also check out Roy Underhill. He's a traditional woodworker who never uses modern tools. His show "The Woodwright Shop" ran on public television for 37 years and the episodes are here on AM-posts. Many thanks again from all the way in Alberta, Canada.

Very cool project. I have an outdoor campfire forge, and the biggest drawback is in daylight, it is hard to discern the colors of the steel. Near dusk it works much better.

For hammering, raise the hammer and dont put weight into it as you swing down. It should feel more like you're just guiding the hammer as it drops, without you putting any force into the strike. It's gentler, but only by a bit, and allows you to forge without getting tired as quickly. Edit: Also, for hardening, i suggest getting some oil, it doesnt cool metal as fast as water, letting the steel harden a bit gentler. It wont crack as often, but is a bit more pricey. If you can, buy a large gallon jug of a high flash point oil, such as canola. Also, for oddly shaped things, you can use a box and pour the oil into it, quench the part or tool, and then pour the oil back into the container you store it in, using a filter just in case.

You are a beast, and inspire without end. The detail you provide to the explanation of everything you do is unmatched, as is your humility- you show the whole process, you experience mistakes, you explain what the mistake was, how you worked around it to STILL make it work well, and then acknowledge you would do it differently and HOW you would do so with that knowledge. I've yet to see anyone that matches your approach, and you set a phenomenal example.

When I was younger (in last century) I lived alone in a sapling house with woven cane walls and layered grass roof on woven bamboo flooring over soil all in mountains of PNG. Made furniture from packing case wood...dug hole for my toilet....completely different climate and situation to yours. I walked everywhere and loved it. But I had beautiful local people living as I did and no bears etc. Your videos give us substance to our dreams as most cannot actually do it. I ended up being captured by a beautiful woman from my own tribe and carried off kicking and screaming very quietly. She has passed now and I am back to a simple life and diet but filled with infinite dreams and memories in a house I built myself of course and structures which others said could not be your “Shaving Bench” it’s perfect. Please keep your series going. We were meant to live on this earth without ruining it or harming others and its logical our maker will keep to his intentions in the long run after we have proved unable to care for this world ourselves. We have great attorneys. Architects. Painters. Musicians. But no one has the ability to govern. We need outside help.
