In 2003 Walter Gregg, then 82, said "Not too many people can say they've had a nuclear bomb dropped on them. Not too many would want to." The 1958 Mars Bluff nuclear weapon incident deserves to be remembered.

IF you search for Mars Bluff Bomb Crater on Google Maps you can see it, though not very well. The magnification is marginal, trees (one very large one in particular) have grown up which obscure part of the crater and there is one of those annoying "pins" over it which I couldn't get rid of. Still, you can definitely see something unusual there, although you'd probably not know what it was if it wasn't labeled.

I grew up about 30 minutes from this site. I remember hearing that there was nuclear material on the device, but it was recovered. If it truly contained no core, why was there an extensive search using Geiger Counters?

The 1961 Goldsboro incident (B52 breakup) involved a nuke failing to detonate in NC due to a single safety switch. I had a coworker 20 years ago who was a retired B47 pilot, he said he loved that airplane, it was beautiful.

Remarkable story. The part that bugs me a lot is how our government didn't pay to rebuild their home. They dropped 2000 pounds of explosives on this family and didn't have the decency to rebuild his home and furnish it. FFS that's pathetic.

The settlement was substantial. The issue was that the Air Force used a formula that included depreciation, and thus was less than the cost of replacement.

If you think this family got screwed by the US government, you should read, "The Day We Bombed Utah" by John G. Fuller. Mr Fuller details a May 1953 nuclear test dubbed, "Dirty Harry", its aftermath and how an entire town was literally screwed to death by government goons. Most of these people were never compensated anything. That test literally cost many of them and their entire families everything they owned and ultimately, their lives.

Goes back to cockpit, "You know our 'device'? We kind of don't have it anymore..." THG: great story and research; pic at 9:47 is clockwise 90 degrees unless there is a gravitational anomaly. I was in the Air Force, stationed at Offutt AFB, NB, in 1967. Back then, women were required to serve 12 months after Basic or 18 months after Tech School and could request discharge upon marriage. I was still living in Bellevue, NB in 1968 when a KC-135 Looking Glass aircraft literally never became airborne. Offutt had a runway over 2 miles long. The Looking Glass needed every bit of that runway to get off the ground (helped by the fact that there was a slope just beyond the runway. At the bottom of the slope was highway 73-75. The plane made it off the runway, across the 4-lane, under telephone wires across the road where it crashed in an empty field. All that was left of the plane was the tail. The fleet (I think it was 7 planes, but I won't swear to that) all carried an officer of General rank (we had all 4 - B, M, L, G) when on its mission. The Looking Glass was in the air 24 hours a day, in 8-hour shifts. These modified KC-135s were also used for training missions where a General was not required. All Looking Glass aircraft were armed with nuclear warheads (4 per plane, again if I remember correctly). This training mission consisted of 7 men, 6 of whom walked away from the crash. Only the pilot was killed. I was able to drive by the crash site several hours after the crash and saw all that was left that was recognizable was the tail of the plane. That anyone survived seemed a miracle to me. The Omaha news outlets speculated on nuclear fallout. The mayor of Omaha was on the radio and TV calming the public by telling them the warheads were not armed. As you would say... "This is history worth remembering." I would do the thumbs up more often, but it doesn't seem possible when watching AM-posts on a smart TV. We are, however, subscribed. Keep up the great work.

Retired Army guy here. They wouldn't pay the man enough to rebuild!? You know the airforce pays their "airmen" extra money if they have to lower themselves and stay at an Army facility? Bomb a mans house almost kill his entire family and are to cheap to make amends. Yeah.....I'll always hate the airFARCE!
S W 20 օր առաջ
@The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered I'm just an old salty 11B. There will always be a certain amount of smack talk between services. However that extra pay to stay at another branches facilities does not go unnoticed and its is REDULOUS. There is so much they could have done for that family. The airforce has engineers like the Army and the Navy's Seabee. They could have literally build him a new house in a couple of days. Compensation doesn't have to be monetary. Anyway love your content. Been subscribed since you were at around 20 something thousand. Congratulations on the growth and not lowering your quality or changing your format with the success!

If Walter Greg had opened up a tourist venue at his property to show the public the damage the bomb did to his house, the federal government would probably have been more inclined to give him enough money to rebuild the house!!😂. The federal governments failure to adequately compensate him for the distraction of his home is one of those examples of Government incompetency that’s still plagues us today. Where were his state senator and Congress men to help him was such an obvious need?

"um there is a problem with one of the safety features on this NUCLEAR BOMB" "righto I'll take a hammer to it until it fits, I'm sure everything will be fine" I have a lot of family and friends that were in the military, I can say with great confidence that man was an officer..... and then tthey tried to talk about it in code, because there was at least enough forsight to come up with a code should the Air Force ever accidentally bomb an American target.....and the code was unrecognized so they had to ask a civilian Air Traffic Control to call the airbase for them on the phone.....these people had NUKES for the love of God they had NUKES no wonder the Aliens won't talk to us lol @ 'their sidearms were confiscated' well no joke I wouldn't trust them to handle guns either! twice in a month?!
