My perspective (current army): This "ban" was not put in place because of discrimination, it makes sense logistically. To a point. Say someone wants to join while transitioning, just after transitioning, or is still in therapy. I am not transgender, but from what I've gathered from digging into it, it takes a lot of time, and a lot of money. Lengthy pre-operation consultation, the procedures themselves, all post-op procedures and appointments to include hormones, therapy, counseling, etc.. The entire process start to finish can take 2+ years. Place that responsibility on the person/patient enlisted in the armed forces and their superiors, and the expenses on the taxpayers, and it just doesn't add up to a beneficial sum for anyone but the individual. We all need to be mission ready at all times, mentally and physically. That includes education, physical fitness, weapons marksmanship, etc. Which can be halted momentarily, life happens, but not for such a timeframe. If you enlist for 4 years, but take 6 months for training, then 2.5 years for transitioning, you're only giving the army 1 year of service, no return on investment for the military. If they're in the middle of transitioning and their unit has to be deployed, they are not able to go, someone else will have to fill their spot, not as easy as it sounds. And if they were to go over, they cannot be dependent on a medication or therapy regimen, hormones, uppers, clockwork appointments, etc. It costs too much to source those things overseas, and not worth it for the military. Even if all those conditions were somehow met, someone dependent on those medications may not have access to them at all times. Out on a mission, misplace the bottle, any circumstance... Miss one dose, overseas or not, and risk the dangerous side effects from not taking said meds, you're now a huge liability. It also strains your chain of command, now having to hyper focus on your wellbeing and ability to perform, it draws them away from mission critical tasks and various other tasks needed in day to day operations. There's a reason we don't allow those with asthma, diabetes, etc. We already have too big a problem with retention, morale, depression, and suicide rates. It just doesn't make sense to add more to the armed forces. Human rights campaign conducted a study (HRC.org), showing over 50% of males, 30% of females, and just over 40% of non binary that participated in the study have attempted suicide. That's a staggering rate, even from a sample group, especially when we're already dealing with a 32% completed suicide rate for servicemen/women. Just to be clear, I have nothing against transgender people, I want them to succeed in life and be happy to the fullest extent with no hindrance to their quality of life. If they're clear and good to go after operations, all said and done, I would welcome anyone to join us with open arms. But we work in a fast paced and unforgiving environment, it's a whole 'nother animal. A soldier's responsibility is already no easy task, adding more weight on your shoulders will set you up for failure. Your pronouns won't be known by everyone you encounter and mistaken identity is inevitably going to happen. Of course those that know should do their best to accommodate, but it won't be perfect. You're held to the same standards as all of us, which would be easier in the army with the new gender neutral fitness test. Just like I say to anyone looking to join, please join for the right reasons. My 2 cents, I hope this helps someone with their thoughts on the controversy.
